Physiotherapy is when mechanical and/or electrical stimulation are applied to parts of the body in order to improve its healing properties and enhance its function. Doctors often use these modalities, or methods, to ease pain or improve overall health. Electrotherapy, a part of physiotherapy, is when electrical forces are applied to accomplish these goals. Physiotherapy includes many things like electrical stimulation or iontophoresis, ultrasound therapy or phonophoresis, cold therapy or cryotherapy, heat therapy or thermotherapy, and physical or mechanical traction. A doctor will choose which form of physiotherapy (or which combination of treatments) will best suit a patient’s unique health goals.
